Early Spring Snowstorm Brings Heavy Snowfall to Bemidji?

3/26/2024 (Permalink)

Snow falls in an early spring storm. We restore storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Beltrami County.

Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams are on call to respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Bemidji. During the spring months, we may encounter many types of storms, including:

Thunderstorms: Thunderstorms are relatively common in the spring. These storms can bring heavy rain, lightning, thunder, and sometimes hail. While most spring thunderstorms are not severe, occasionally, they can produce damaging winds or even tornadoes.

Rainstorms: Spring often sees an increase in rainfall, leading to rainstorms. These storms can result in localized flooding, especially if they bring heavy and persistent rain over a short period.

Snowstorms: Early spring can still see winter-like conditions, which means the area can experience late-season snowstorms. These storms may bring heavy snowfall and can have a significant impact on travel and daily life.

Ice storms: In the transition between winter and spring, we may also experience ice storms, which can coat surfaces with a layer of freezing rain and ice. These storms can create hazardous road conditions and lead to power outages.

Heavy Snow Load Damages Roof of Keewatin Home?

2/13/2024 (Permalink)

A roof is covered in snow. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours daily in Itasca County.

Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams are leaders in storm damage restoration services in Keewatin. Allowing snow to accumulate on rooftops can lead to various problems and is generally not advisable for several reasons.

The weight of accumulated snow can place an enormous load on the roof structure, exceeding its design capacity. This excess weight can result in structural damage, including roof collapses or compromised integrity, leading to costly repairs or even endangering the occupants.

Snow melts during the day and refreezes at night, encouraging the formation of ice dams along the roof's eaves. These ice dams can obstruct proper drainage, causing water to back up under the shingles and leak into the interior of the building. This water infiltration can damage ceilings, walls, insulation, and electrical systems, leading to costly repairs and mold issues.

Additionally, the constant presence of snow on the roof can contribute to poor insulation efficiency, making it harder and more expensive to heat the building. Snow on the roof can act as an insulator, preventing proper heat transfer through the roof and increasing heating costs during the winter months.

To discourage property damage from snow load accumulation, snow should be removed routinely from rooftops to prevent structural damage, ice dam formation, and energy inefficiency, ultimately protecting the integrity and longevity of the building.

Winter Storm Wreaks Havoc on Grand Rapids Homes?

1/30/2024 (Permalink)

A home is covered in snow from a recent storm. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Itasca County.

Severe weather is a common threat to homes during the winter months. Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams are highly trained and certified to restore storm damage quickly and efficiently. Some of the potential damage that can occur during a winter storm in Grand Rapids include:

Snow Accumulation: Heavy snowfall can accumulate on roofs, creating the risk of structural damage, especially for older or weaker roofs.

Ice Dams: The combination of snow and freezing temperatures can lead to ice dams on roofs, which can cause water infiltration, roof leaks, and damage to ceilings and walls.

Frozen Pipes: Extremely cold temperatures can lead to frozen water pipes, which can burst and cause water damage when they thaw.

Power Outages: Winter storms may result in power outages due to downed power lines or equipment failures. This can lead to heating system failures, frozen pipes, and other issues.

Wind Damage: High winds associated with winter storms can damage roofs, siding, windows, and doors. It can also cause falling trees or branches that may damage homes...

Reduced Insulation Efficiency: Snow and ice can accumulate on walls and around windows and doors, reducing the insulation's effectiveness and increasing heating costs.

Frost Heave: The freezing and thawing of the ground can cause frost heave, which can affect foundations, driveways, and sidewalks.

Flooding During Thaw: After a winter storm, the melting snow can lead to localized flooding and water damage, especially if storm drains are blocked.

Our Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams respond to storm damage emergencies throughout the year and want everyone to stay safe during and after a disaster happens. Every September the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) hosts National Preparedness Month, a month-long series of events and awareness campaigns to help communities across the nation with disaster planning.

During National Preparedness Month, widespread public awareness campaigns are conducted by organizations such as FEMA, the American Red Cross, and other emergency management agencies. These campaigns utilize multiple communication channels, including television, radio, social media, and websites, to disseminate information about preparedness measures, resources, and action steps.

This year’s theme focuses on elderly populations and identifying their needs for support and resources before, during, and after a disaster occurs. According to the Red Cross, there are several factors that make older adults more vulnerable after disasters, including, but not limited to:

  • A greater likelihood to suffer from chronic conditions and the need for associated medications
  • A greater reliance on assistive devices such as walkers or glasses, as well as support from caregivers and others
  •  An increased likelihood of social isolation

Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing team has been restoring storm damage in Grand Rapids for many years. Tornado Safety Tips for Pengilly Residents?

6/6/2023 (Permalink)

A tornado is visible in the sky. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in Beltrami County.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, tornadoes have occurred in Minnesota every month from March through November. Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams have been restoring storm damage for Pengilly residents for years. Here are some tornado safety tips from the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

Although there is no completely safe place during a tornado, some locations are much safer than others.

  • Go to the basement or an inside room without windows on the lowest floor (bathroom, closet, center hallway)
  • If possible, avoid sheltering in any room with windows
  • For added protection get under something sturdy (a heavy table or workbench). Cover your body with a blanket, sleeping bag or mattress. Protect your head with anything available.
  • Do not stay in a mobile home

If you are outside or in a mobile home, find a nearby building, preferably with a basement. If you are in a car, do not try to outrun a tornado, but instead, find the nearest sturdy building.

No one can know a tornado’s strength before it touches down, so keep up with local weather information, especially when thunderstorms are forecasted. Prepare your home and family for the possibility of a tornado. Moving to a shelter quickly is easier when everyone knows where to go, whether in your home or outdoors. Following these tips will give you the best chance of staying safe.

Overland Flooding Predicted for Low-lying Areas of Beltrami County?

5/23/2023 (Permalink)

A road is closed due to flooding. We restore storm damage 24 hours a day in Bemidji.

Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams witness firsthand the damage flooding can cause to homes and commercial properties in Beltrami County. The combination of snow and warmer temperatures can cause a rapid thaw that may lead to overland flooding when streams and drainage areas cannot handle the volume of water from the thaw.

The Bemidji Pioneer urges people with basements and lower-level walkouts or entries to make sure water is flowing away from the home and check to see that sump pumps are in working condition. If your home experienced flooding last year, make sure all drainage areas are clear and rain gutters and downspouts are free of debris.

Here are some tips from the National Weather Service for staying safe while driving in flood conditions:

Flood Condition Driving Safety Rules

  • Avoid already flooded and high-velocity flow areas. Do not attempt to cross flowing streams. If you enter a flowing stream and the water gets above your knee, TURN AROUND DON’T DROWN.
  • Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams and washes, particularly during threatening conditions
  • If floodwaters rise around your car, but the water is not moving, abandon the car and move to higher ground. Do not leave the vehicle and enter the moving water.

How Can I Keep My Food From Spoiling During a Power Outage in Bemidji?

5/9/2023 (Permalink)

Storms can cause power outages at any time of the year in Beltrami County, causing food supplies to spoil. Our team in Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing responds to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day. The United States Department of Agriculture offers these helpful tips for food safety during a power outage:

  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed
  • The refrigerator will keep food safe for up to 4 hours. If the power is off longer, you can transfer food to a cooler and fill it with ice or frozen gel packs. Make sure there is enough ice to keep food in the cooler at 40°F or below. Add more ice to the cooler as it begins to melt.
  • A full freezer will hold the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full)
  • Obtain dry ice or block ice if your power is going to be out for a prolonged period. Fifty pounds of dry ice should hold an 18-cubic-foot freezer for 2 days. (Caution: Do not touch dry ice with bare hands or place it in direct contact with food.)
  • In freezers, food in the front, in the door, or in small, thin packages will defrost faster than large, thick items or food in the back or bottom of the unit

Grand Rapids Home Suffers Water Damage From Burst Frozen Pipe?

2/7/2023 (Permalink)

Isicles shown We restore storm damage 24-hours a day in Itasca County.

Our local team in Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing responds to water damage emergencies caused by frozen pipes every year in Grand Rapids, and we offer these tips for preventing frozen pipes from the Red Cross:

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up and out of the reach of children.
  • When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
  • If you are going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, and set to a temperature not below 55° Fahrenheit

Worst Summer Storm in Bemidji History?

8/16/2022 (Permalink)

Thunderclouds are moving through the atmosphere. We restore storm damage 24-hours a day in Beltrami County.

Our local team in Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing restores storm damage 24-hours a day. In 2012, 80 miles per hour straight-line winds caused by a fast-moving thunderstorm tore through northern Minnesota and left a trail of debris and property damage. Powerlines fell, leaving many people without power.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), straight-line winds cause far more damage than winds from tornadoes. The NOAA defines straight-line winds as thunderstorm winds that have no rotation, and these winds do not produce tornadoes.

Downbursts are a common cause of wind damage from a thunderstorm, and they can reach over 100 miles per hour and are caused by air being dragged down by precipitation. When the air reaches the ground, it spreads out across the surface of the land it encounters in a straight line.

A Derecho is a very long-lived and damaging thunderstorm. A storm is classified as a derecho if the wind damage swath extends more than 240 miles and has wind gusts of at least 58 miles per hour along most of the length of the storm’s path.

  • Pea = 1/4 inch diameter
  • Mothball = 1/2 inch diameter
  • Penny = 3/4 inch diameter
  • Nickel = 7/8 inch
  • Quarter = 1 inch — hail quarter size or larger is considered severe
  • Ping-Pong Ball = 1 1/2 inch
  • Golf Ball = 1 3/4 inches
  • Tennis Ball = 2 1/2 inches
  • Baseball = 2 3/4 inches
  • Tea cup = 3 inches

Rare Spring Storm Impacts Northern Minnesota and Bemidji?

4/13/2022 (Permalink)

Snow covers cars on the street. We restore storm damage 24-hours a day in Beltrami County.

Last month, our Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing team responded to many storm damage emergencies caused by a rare, messy spring storm and unusual snow burst. This complex storm was a combination of freezing rain, sleet, and thunderstorms ending with snowfall accumulating at rates of up to three inches per hour! The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources describes the rarity of this storm as follows:

  • A typical "heavy" snowfall observation in Minnesota, with visibility to a quarter-mile or less, is associated with rates of about an inch per hour
  • Most areas in Minnesota see these types of snowfall rates once or twice per year on average, and it's not uncommon for communities to go years in between them
  • Even in heavy snowstorms, sustained snowfall rates exceeding two inches per hour are uncommon, and such observation may be expected just once or twice per decade, on average
  • Snowfall rates of three inches per hour occur only in Minnesota's very heaviest snow bands, and a given community may have decades in between such observations

Damaged Rain Gutters in Grand Rapids?

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

A damaged rain gutter is shown. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Itasca County.

Before winter sets in is an excellent time for Grand Rapids residents to inspect rain gutter systems for possible damage or debris and make repairs as needed. SERVPRO® of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing responds to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day, and we typically arrive onsite within four hours of your call. Here are some tips for inspecting your rain gutters from home expert Bob Villa:

Inspect your rain gutters for visible signs of cracking. Use binoculars to inspect for smaller cracks. If you see extensive cracking, replacement is required.

Inspect gutter seams for damage where two horizontal sections meet.

Inspect your home’s paint job. If there is evidence of paint peeling, it may point to rain gutter failure. Check the section of the rain gutter closest to the paint damage for leaks. If there are more than a couple of leaks, you may want to replace the rain gutters.

Inspect your home’s exterior wood elements for rotting windowsills or door jambs. You may have clogged rain gutters or inadequate storm drainage.

Inspect the exterior of the home for mildew damage. If there is moisture accumulating around or near the foundation, mildew can grow. This is a sign your rain gutters are not working properly.

Wind-damaged Roof in Keewatin?

9/21/2021 (Permalink)

A roof is shown with damaged roof shingles. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Itasca County.

Storm damage can happen at any time of the year in Keewatin. High winds can cause damage to the roofs of homes and businesses, but there are ways to minimize the potential for roof damage. SERVPRO® of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing mitigates and restores storm damage 24-hours a day. Here are some tips for making your roof less vulnerable to wind damage from State Farm Insurance:

  • Strong winds can cause shingles to peel off, especially if edge shingles are not well secured or the adhesive on their tabs has failed
    • A roofing professional can evaluate your roof, and if needed, additional roofing cement can be added under each tab to help keep the shingles attached during a high-wind event
  • The shingles should be attached to roof decking of solid 5/8-inch-thick plywood
  • The roof decking should be attached to the roof framing using 8 diameter ring shank nails and a secondary water barrier created by installing self-adhering flashing tape over the joints in the roof deck
  • For greater resistance to wind uplift, apply a bead of construction adhesive along both sides of the intersection between the roof decking and the rafters or trusses. Your roofing professional can provide you with information about additional safeguards.

Storm-Damaged Home in Grand Rapids?

8/30/2021 (Permalink)

A tree has fallen over in a storm by a house. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Itasca County.

Last month, Grand Rapids residents were without power after a severe storm toppled trees that caused damage to powerlines. SERVPRO® of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing worked closely within the community to mitigate and restore damage caused by the storm. Here are some tips from the American Red Cross for staying safe when there is a power outage:

Monitor alerts. Check local weather reports and any notifications.

Contact your support network and let people know you’re okay.

Keep food cold, and when in doubt, throw it out. Eat your fresh, perishable foods first. Throw out food that has been warmer than 40 degrees F.

Prevent power overloads and fire hazards. Unplug appliances and electronics. Use flashlights, not candles. Turn off the utilities only if you suspect damage or if local officials instruct you to do so. If any circuit breakers have been tripped, contact an electrician to inspect them before turning them on.

Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Don’t use a gas stove to heat your home, and do not use outdoor stoves indoors for heating or cooking. If using a generator, keep it outside in a well-ventilated area

Wildfire Prevention Tips for Bemidji?

7/5/2021 (Permalink)

White lightning is shown striking against a dark sky. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Beltrami County.

SERVPRO® of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing responds to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day. Lightning strikes and humans both can cause wildfires. Here are some tips from the American Red Cross to prevent wildfires:

Prevention is critical as people cause 85 percent of wildfires by burning debris, using equipment improperly, discarding cigarettes carelessly, leaving campfires unattended, and arson.

  • Don’t drive your vehicle onto dry grass or brush. Hot components under your vehicle can spark fires.
  • Use equipment responsibly. Lawnmowers, chain saws, tractors, and trimmers can all spark a wildfire.
  • Use caution any time you use fire. Dispose of charcoal briquettes and fireplace ashes properly, never leave any outdoor fire unattended and make sure that outdoor fires are fully extinguished before leaving the area.
  • If residential debris burning is allowed – use caution! After obtaining any necessary permits, ensure that burning is not currently restricted in your area.
  • Store combustible or flammable materials in approved safety containers away from the house
  • Keep the gas grill and propane tank at least 15 feet away from any structure
  • Do not use the grill during potentially dangerous fire weather conditions. Always have a fire extinguisher or hose nearby.

Prepping for Severe Weather

4/7/2020 (Permalink)

Prepping for Severe Weather With Your Family | SERVPRO® of Bemidji. Grand Rapids and Hibbing.

While there is often advanced warning for some types of severe weather, there are also times when Mother Nature can manage to catch us off-guard.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take and safety tips to follow to prepare your family for various severe weather occurrences.

Where to Begin

One of the best ways to be prepared in severe weather situations is to have a family emergency plan established.

If your family does have an emergency plan in place, be sure to discuss it, review it and have drills at the onset of various weather seasons, making sure that everyone knows exactly what to do at a moment’s notice.

If you’ve not yet created a family emergency plan, here are some things to take into consideration when creating it:

1. How will you receive emergency alerts?

Thanks to technology today, it is easy to receive emergency alerts and warnings in the palm of your hand by way of smartphones, as well as receive alerts through radio and television broadcasts. If you have a weather app or Google on your smartphone, you will quickly receive emergency alerts, which can provide you with valuable time in severe weather situations.

2. What storm shelter options are available?

Taking shelter in areas where tornadoes are common means you’ll want to be in the lowest part of your home, preferably a basement if you have one. If that is not possible, choose an interior room on the lowest level of your home or building that is away from corners, windows, doors and outside walls. Be sure to visit ready.gov for other situations that may require a storm shelter or basement.

3. Do you have evacuation routes mapped out?

Evacuations are stressful so you should always have evacuation routes mapped out in advance. It’s wise to have multiple routes just in case one is impassable, and make sure those routes will have places to stay with your pets along the way if you have furry family members to evacuate with.

4. How will everyone keep in touch?

When there is an emergency, communication is key. It is easy to rely on cell phones to keep in touch with your family, but in some circumstances, that just isn’t feasible. Cell phone towers can incur damage, phones could be lost or left behind, and batteries will die if there is a power outage and there is no power source for recharging.

Hence, it is wise to have an emergency communication plan in place for your family and a safe meeting place for your family to meet should family members be separated during the emergency.

If a storm does cause damage to your home or business, don’t hesitate to call your friends at SERVPRO of Bemidji, Grand Rapids and Hibbing to get the cleanup and restoration process started.

Is my Sump Pump Working?

4/7/2020 (Permalink)

Tips to Avoid Water Damage

No power: If the power goes out during a storm, your sump pump won’t be able to drain the water.

Wrong size: If your sump pump is too small a sump pump for your home’s size can mean too big a job for it to handle. On the flip side, running too large a sump pump can shorten its lifespan.

Old age: Just like any appliance, the years can reduce the efficiency and working order of your sump pump. The average lifespan of a sump pump is roughly 10 years. If yours is creeping up in age, consider replacing it with a more current model.

Clogged pipe: Debris can enter your discharge pipe and create a backup. With nowhere for the water to flow, your sump pump will come to a stop.

Lack of maintenance: Your home and the appliances that make it run require regular maintenance. Clean your sump pump three to four times a year to avoid blockages in your discharge line, vents, and floats.

Switch issues: When the sump pump shifts in the basin, the float that administers the switch can cause it to become jammed.

Product or installation problem: In addition to product defects, which are out of your control, improper installation can also cause sump pump failure.

Sump pump fails and causes water damage while you are out of town.

A Homeowner in Livonia came home from vacation he discovered that his finished basement had 2”- 3” of standing water covering the entire basement. SERVPRO was called out to a home in to clean up the water damage.  Upon inspection, Technicians noticed mold on the walls, floor, and contents, which lead them to believe that the water damage had occurred a while ago.

Unfortunately, the homeowner did not have insurance coverage to clean up the mess the water left behind. SERVPRO worked with the homeowner to remove affected materials and dry out the basement.

  • Food – non-perishable
  • Manual can opener
  • Battery operated radio, preferably a weather radio
  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries for radio and flashlight
  • First Aid kit

  • Clothing, blankets
  • Dust mask or bandanas
  • Plastic sheeting, garbage bags, and duct tape
  • Wrench or other tools to shut off utilities
  • Hygiene items
  • Important documents. (Copy of insurance policy, bank account info, identification, etc.)

Make A Family Plan: A family plan can be essential to survival during sever weather. A family plan can allow everyone to know where to go and what to do in case of an emergency. These plans should include designated rooms in the home to meet in case of severe weather. Also, they should include a designated spot outside of the home to meet up at incase of separation.

Severe weather is unpredictable and SERVPRO of Bemidji, Grand Rapids, & Hibbing wants you to be safe no matter the season! Below are some severe weather readiness tips to help guide you, no matter what type of disaster you may encounter.

Weather Radios: With all of today’s technology it still can’t stand up to a battery powered weather radio during an emergency. Mobile devices maybe what most people use today for checking weather updates, but the towers that send out the signals required for the devices to function can be damages or congested during times of emergency. A weather radio with fully charged batteries can provide Families with more reliable alerts and updates. These radios have the capability of receiving special frequencies for the for special radio stations that provide warnings for all hazards. Look for our next blog for tips on emergency supply kits and making a family plan.
