Bemidji Community Plans in Advance for the Next Disaster?
9/26/2023 (Permalink)
Our Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams respond to storm damage emergencies throughout the year and want everyone to stay safe during and after a disaster happens. Every September the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) hosts National Preparedness Month, a month-long series of events and awareness campaigns to help communities across the nation with disaster planning.
During National Preparedness Month, widespread public awareness campaigns are conducted by organizations such as FEMA, the American Red Cross, and other emergency management agencies. These campaigns utilize multiple communication channels, including television, radio, social media, and websites, to disseminate information about preparedness measures, resources, and action steps.
This year’s theme focuses on elderly populations and identifying their needs for support and resources before, during, and after a disaster occurs. According to the Red Cross, there are several factors that make older adults more vulnerable after disasters, including, but not limited to:
- A greater likelihood to suffer from chronic conditions and the need for associated medications
- A greater reliance on assistive devices such as walkers or glasses, as well as support from caregivers and others
- An increased likelihood of social isolation
