Ice Dam damage in Bemidji?
2/1/2022 (Permalink)
Have you noticed icicles appearing on your roofline? If so, you have an ice dam that is preventing water from draining into your rain gutters and downspouts. SERVPRO® of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing responds to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day, and during the winter months, many of these emergencies involve ice dams. Any water behind the ice dam that remains in a liquid state can penetrate underneath the roof shingles and seep into other openings in the exterior roof covering and can enter the attic space and cause water damage.
The University of Minnesota Extension (UMN) identifies several ways ice dams can form. Here are some examples from UMN:
- For ice dams to form, there must be snow on the roof, and at the same time, higher portions of the roof’s outside surface must be above 32 degrees Fahrenheit while lower surfaces are below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Heat loss from a house
- Nonuniform roof surface temperatures
