Spring Snowmelt Causes Flooding Conditions on Hibbing?

4/2/2024 (Permalink)

A car drives through a flooded street. We restore flooding damage 24 hours a day in St. Louis County.

During the spring, Hibbing residents can sustain flooding damage. Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams have the training, equipment, and experience to mitigate and restore flooding damage “Like it never even happened.” Snowmelt, ice jams, and precipitation primarily drive these flooding conditions. Here are some potential spring flooding scenarios:

River Flooding: Hibbing’s proximity to rivers and streams, like the St. Louis River, makes the area vulnerable to river flooding. As temperatures rise and snow begins to melt in the spring, river levels can increase rapidly, leading to river flooding. Ice jams exacerbate this flooding by causing water to back up and overflow onto nearby land.

Urban Flooding: Heavy rainfall combined with melting snow can overwhelm stormwater drainage systems, leading to urban flooding. Low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage infrastructure are particularly susceptible to inundation during the spring months.

Flash Flooding: Intense rainstorms, though less common in the region during the spring, can still occur and result in flash flooding.

Groundwater Flooding: As snow melts and precipitation infiltrates the soil, groundwater levels can rise, flooding groundwater. This type of flooding may not be as visible as river or urban flooding but can still cause damage to basements, crawl spaces, and underground infrastructure.

Ice Dam Leak Causes Damage to Interior of Home in Hibbing?

3/5/2024 (Permalink)

A home with severe ice dams is shown. We are leaders in ice dam damage restorations in St. Louis County.

Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams restore ice dam damage every winter. Ice dams are a common cause of water damage during the winter. Ice dams can inflict extensive damage to the interior of a home, affecting various structural elements and personal belongings. When ice dams form on the roof and trap melting snow and ice, the consequences inside the home can be significant:

Ceiling and Wall Damage: Water leakage into the attic and interior spaces is the most common result. This leakage can lead to staining, peeling paint, and structural damage to ceilings and walls. Over time, it can compromise the integrity of these surfaces.

Insulation Compromise: Insulation in the attic and walls can become saturated with water, rendering it ineffective. Damaged insulation reduces energy efficiency, causing higher heating costs and temperature fluctuations within the home.

Mold and Mildew Growth: The moisture from ice dam leaks creates an ideal environment for mold and mildew to thrive. These microorganisms can proliferate within walls, ceilings, and attics, necessitating costly remediation efforts.

Electrical Problems: Water intrusion can damage electrical systems, fixtures, and wiring in the attic or along interior walls. This damage can result in electrical malfunctions, safety hazards, and the need for electrical repairs or replacements.

Flooring and Personal Belongings: Water leaking from ice dams can damage flooring, carpets, and personal belongings stored in affected areas. Furniture, electronics, and other possessions can suffer irreparable harm.

Adequate Attic Insulation Prevents Ice Dams From Forming on Roofs in Bemidji?

2/20/2024 (Permalink)

Icicles form along the edge of a roof. We restore ice dam damage in Beltrami County.

Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams are trusted leaders in ice dam damage restoration services. Adequate insulation in an attic is critical in preventing ice dam formation because it helps maintain a consistent temperature on the roof's surface. Here's why:

Temperature Control: Insulation acts as a barrier between the living spaces in your home and the unconditioned attic. It prevents warm air from escaping into the attic space. When warm air rises and heats the roof from below, it can cause the snow on the roof's surface to melt, even when the outdoor temperature is below freezing.

Consistent Roof Temperature: Proper attic insulation keeps the roof temperature closer to the outdoor temperature. When the roof remains cold, the snow is less likely to melt. This reduces the risk of water runoff, which can refreeze at the eaves and create ice dams.

Reducing Temperature Differences: Insulation also helps minimize temperature differences on the roof's surface. When some parts of the roof are warmer than others, it can lead to uneven melting and refreezing of snow, contributing to ice dam formation.

Bemidji Residents Rely On Us to Restore Frozen Pipe Water Damage?

2/6/2024 (Permalink)

A person holds a bucket up to catch water dripping through a wall. We respond to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Beltrami County.

Water damage can happen at any time of the year, and during the winter months, water damage from frozen pipes is known to happen in our region. Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams are on call and ready to respond to water damage emergencies day or night, 365 days a year. When water in pipes freezes, it expands, creating immense pressure within the pipes. This pressure can lead to cracks or fractures in the pipe walls, and when the ice thaws or if there's an attempt to use the plumbing system, water begins to flow uncontrollably. Here are the potential consequences of burst frozen pipes:

Flooded Interiors: The bursting of pipes can result in immediate flooding of affected areas, causing extensive damage to floors, walls, ceilings, and belongings.

Structural Damage: Prolonged exposure to water can weaken structural components like wooden beams, drywall, and the foundation, leading to long-term structural issues.

Mold Growth: Moisture from the burst pipes creates an ideal environment for mold growth, which can affect indoor air quality and pose health risks.

Electrical Hazards: Water infiltration can damage electrical systems, increasing the risk of electrical fires and other safety hazards.

Possessions Damage: Furniture, electronics, documents, and personal belongings may be irreparably damaged by water.

Water Stains on My Ceiling Caused by Ice Dams On My Roof in Bemidji?

1/9/2024 (Permalink)

Water stains form on the ceiling of a home. We restore ice dam damage 24 hours daily in Beltrami County.

Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams respond to water damage emergencies throughout the year in Bemidji. Water leaks are clear and often the most obvious sign of ice dam damage, and they can lead to significant water intrusion inside your home. Here's how ice dams cause water leaks:

Ice Dam Formation: Ice dams develop when snow on your roof's upper, warmer section melts due to heat escaping from your home's interior. This melted snow flows downward toward the eaves, which are colder because they extend beyond the heated living space.

Blocked Drainage: As the melted water reaches the eaves, it encounters freezing temperatures and refreezes, forming an ice dam along the roof's edge. This ice barrier prevents further drainage of water off the roof.

Water Backup: With nowhere to go, the trapped water can pool behind the ice dam and begin to back up under your roofing shingles. It can also seep through any cracks or gaps in the roof's structure.

Interior Water Damage: As water infiltrates beneath the roofing materials, it can penetrate the roof deck, and underlayment, and eventually reach the attic space. Once inside, it can drip onto your insulation, ceiling, or drywall.

Secondary Damage: Prolonged exposure to moisture can lead to mold and mildew growth in your attic and insulation.

Frozen Pipes Cause Water Damage in Bemidji Home?

1/3/2024 (Permalink)

A downspout is filled with icicles. We restore water damage 24 hours daily in Beltrami County.

Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams respond to water damage from frozen pipes often during the winter months. Frozen pipes occur when the water inside pipes freezes and it expands and creates tremendous pressure within the pipe. This increased pressure can cause pipes to crack, burst, or develop weak points, leading to water leaks when the ice starts to thaw. Here are some examples of the kinds of damage frozen pipes can do to a structure:

Structural damage: Water leakage can saturate building materials like drywall, wood, and insulation, weakening their structural integrity. Over time, this can lead to sagging ceilings, buckled floors, and compromised walls.

Mold and mildew growth: Excess moisture from the water damage creates the perfect environment for mold to thrive.

Electrical damage: Water can infiltrate electrical systems, leading to short circuits, electrical fires, and a heightened risk of electrocution.

Possession damage: Personal belongings, furniture, electronics, and valuables can be ruined or severely damaged by water, requiring costly replacements.

Increased utility bills: Leaky pipes can lead to continuous water loss, causing an increase in water bills. Additionally, the home's heating system may work harder to compensate for the colder temperatures, increasing energy bills.

A closeup of mold spores is shown. We are leaders in mold remediation services in Itasca County.

For many years, Grand Rapids residents and businesses have relied on our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams to provide mold removal services. Mold outbreaks are a common challenge in Itasca County, but one way to discourage mold growth is to use mold-resistant building materials.

Mold-resistant insulation materials are designed to resist moisture and inhibit the growth of mold and mildew. Here are some examples:

Closed-Cell Spray Foam Insulation: Closed-cell spray foam insulation is an excellent choice for moisture-prone areas because it creates an effective moisture barrier. It provides an airtight seal and has a high R-value.

Mineral Wool (Rock Wool) Insulation: Mineral wool is naturally resistant to moisture and does not support the growth of mold or mildew. It can be used in various applications, including basements and attics.

Closed-Cell XPS (Extruded Polystyrene) Foam Board: XPS foam board insulation is resistant to moisture and can be used in applications like basement walls and crawlspaces. It has a high R-value and provides an effective thermal barrier.

Polyisocyanurate (Polyiso) Foam Board: Polyiso foam board insulation has good moisture resistance and a high R-value. It can be used in various building envelope applications, including roofs and walls.

Cementitious Foam Board Insulation: This type of insulation is made from cement and foam. It is moisture-resistant and can be used in areas where water exposure is a concern, such as basements and foundations.

Tips for Preventing Frozen Pipes While on Vacation in Marble?

12/12/2023 (Permalink)

A pipe is frozen. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in Itasca County.

Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams are trusted water damage restoration services leaders. For years, residents in Marble have relied on us to restore water damage. During the winter months, frozen pipes are a common challenge. Here are some tips for preventing frozen pipes while on vacation:

Insulate Exposed Pipes

Insulate any exposed pipes in your home, especially those in unheated areas like basements, attics, or crawl spaces.

Maintain a Warm House

Set your thermostat to a temperature that is at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit or higher to ensure your home stays warm. This will help prevent pipes from freezing.

Seal Leaks and Cracks

Inspect your home for any drafts, gaps, or cracks that could allow cold air to enter. Seal these openings with caulk or weatherstripping to keep the warm air inside.

Leave Cabinet Doors Open

For pipes located under sinks or in cabinets, leave the cabinet doors open to allow warm air to circulate around them.

Drip Faucets

Allow a small trickle of water to flow from your faucets, both hot and cold. This constant flow can help prevent freezing.

Disconnect Outdoor Hoses

If you have outdoor hoses connected to faucets, disconnect them and drain any remaining water. Consider installing freeze-proof hose bibs.

Insulate the Garage

If your plumbing runs through the garage, insulate the garage doors and any exposed pipes in this area.

Shut Off the Main Water Supply

If you plan to be away for an extended period, consider shutting off the main water supply to your home. This will prevent water from entering your plumbing system and freezing.

Drain the Pipes

If you're going to be away for a long time during the coldest months, you can drain your plumbing system entirely. Turn off the water supply, open all faucets, and flush toilets to empty the pipes.

Ask a Neighbor or Friend for Help

Enlist the help of a trusted neighbor, friend, or family member to periodically check on your home while you're away. They can ensure that the heat is working and there are no issues with frozen pipes.

Install a Temperature Monitoring System

Consider installing a temperature monitoring system that can alert you if the temperature in your home drops below a certain threshold. Some smart home devices can provide this functionality.

Prepare for Power Outages:

In case of power outages during winter storms, have a backup power source like a generator to keep your heating system running. By taking these precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of frozen pipes while you're on vacation and protect your home from potential water damage and costly repairs.

Bemidji Home Flooded by Malfunctioning Washing Machine?

12/5/2023 (Permalink)

A washing machine is overflowing. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Beltrami County.

Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams are trusted leaders in water damage restoration services. A washing machine can malfunction in several ways, leading to water damage in a home. Here are some common ways a washing machine can cause water damage:

Leaking Hoses: Washing machines have hoses that connect to the water supply. These hoses can deteriorate over time, develop cracks, or become loose. If a hose leaks or bursts while the washing machine is in use, it can release a significant amount of water into the home.

Faulty Water Inlet Valve: The water inlet valve controls the flow of water into the washing machine during different cycles. If the valve malfunctions or develops a defect, it may not close properly, allowing water to continuously flow into the machine even when it's not in use.

Overloading or Uneven Loading: Overloading the washing machine or loading it unevenly can cause it to become unbalanced during the spin cycle. An unbalanced washing machine can bounce and vibrate, potentially causing the water to spill out of the tub and onto the floor.

Drain Pump Issues: The drain pump is responsible for removing water from the washing machine after each cycle. If the drain pump becomes clogged, damaged, or fails to function correctly, it can result in water not properly draining from the machine.

Door Seal or Gasket Damage: The door seal or gasket on a front-loading washing machine can develop tears, cracks, or become loose over time. If the seal is damaged, water can leak out during the wash cycle.

Overfilling: In rare cases, a malfunction in the water level sensor or pressure switch can lead to the washing machine overfilling with water, causing it to spill over the top and onto the floor.

Heat Tape Prevents Pipes From Freezing in Hibbing?

11/20/2023 (Permalink)

A person applies thermal tape to the exterior of pipes to prevent freezing. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in St. Louis County. County.

Our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams respond to water damage emergencies caused by frozen pipes often during the winter months. One way to prevent frozen pipes is to wrap plumbing pipes in heat tape.

Heat tape, also known as heating cable or heat tracing cable, is an electrical or self-regulating heating element used to prevent pipes and other surfaces from freezing in cold weather. It is designed to provide a controlled amount of heat to keep temperatures above freezing, thereby preventing the formation of ice and protecting against pipe damage and other cold-related issues.

Heat tape is typically wrapped or attached to the surface you want to protect, such as water pipes, roof gutters, or downspouts. It can be installed in a spiral or zigzag pattern along the length of the pipe to cover the entire surface evenly. Some heat tapes come with built-in thermostats or temperature sensors that automatically activate the tape when the temperature drops to a certain level and deactivate it when it's no longer needed.

When using heat tape, it's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety guidelines to ensure proper installation and operation. It's also essential to regularly inspect and maintain the heat tape to ensure it continues to work effectively and safely, especially in extreme cold weather conditions.

Water from a Broken Pipe Damages Blackduck Home Overnight?

5/16/2023 (Permalink)

Water shoots out from a hole in a corroded pipe. We respond to water damage emergencies 365 days a year in Beltrami County.

Water damage can happen at any time of the day or night. That’s why our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing team is on call and ready to respond to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day, and we typically arrive onsite within four hours of your call.

Although water damage often comes as an unwelcome surprise, sometimes there are warning signs. One cause of broken pipes is water hammers. Water hammers happen when a faucet or appliance is switched off abruptly. Water is pressurized, so if it hits the end of the line abruptly, it will send shock waves through the pipe, causing a banging sound.

The vibration in the pipe can actually make the pipe bang into anything nearby, like a wall. Over time, the pipes break and cause water damage. If you hear banging in your walls, call a plumbing professional right away. You may avoid a catastrophic plumbing failure!

Broken Pipe Floods Home in Grand Rapids?

4/18/2023 (Permalink)

A water shut-off valve is shown. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Itasca County.

Our local team in Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing witnesses firsthand the damage a broken pipe can do to a home or commercial property. Broken pipes can cause catastrophic water damage in as little as one hour. For this reason, everyone in the household should know where the main water shut-off valve is located and how to turn it off.

Here is some information on locating and shutting off the main water shut-off valve:

Start by locating the main shut-off valve. The main cut-off valves are usually outdoors in warmer climates, and in colder climates, these valves are usually indoors. The water shut-off valves have either round wheel or lever handles.

It is important to note that if a valve is difficult to turn – DO NOT force it. Call a licensed plumber or the local public works authority for assistance.

  • Round wheel handle valves will turn off by turning the handle to the right (clockwise). A few turns should stop the wheel.
  • Handle valves should slowly be turned clockwise ¼ turn. The handle should no longer be parallel to the pipe. It should stop at a ¼ turn.

We had an issue at 11:30 at night with standing water in our basement. The lady who took all of my information was so delightful to talk to. She was so nice. The guy who came out to work on our house told us he’d be at our house in a few hours and that they have a window of up to 4 hours to be at our house. He showed up in 2. They worked really quick and made sure everything was very dry! I couldn’t be happier with how things went! Thanks, SERVPRO!” Cassie

How Can Ice Dams Damage my Low-Slope Roof in Bemidji?

2/14/2023 (Permalink)

Frozen water stands on a low slope commercial roof. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in Beltrami County.

Our local team in Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing responds to water damage emergencies caused by ice dam damage every year. The best way to prevent ice dams from forming on a commercial roof is to remove the snow as soon as possible.

Causes of Ice Dams

According to the National Weather Service, ice dams are formed when the temperatures fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and are found mainly on low slope roofs. Some common causes of ice dams include poor ventilation and insulation in the attic, placement of heating in the attic, and recessed lighting near the roof.

How Can Ice Dams Damage My Commercial Roof?

There are two common ways ice dams cause damage to commercial roofs.

  1. Freezing Water

Freezing water can damage the roof because it expands and can tear the sealing points along the roof’s edge when it freezes. Additionally, large icicles can accumulate at the roof’s edge, and the weight of the icicles can damage the roof and the eavestrough or rain gutter.

  1. Pooling Water

If water pools behind an ice dam, it may seep into your commercial building because it has nowhere to drain. Pooling water can cause extensive damage to the structure of the building as well as to the insulation, drywall, and electrical systems.

Freezing Temperatures Freeze Pipes in Pengilly?

1/17/2023 (Permalink)

Frozen water in a downspout is shown. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Itasca County.

Our local team in Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing is a trusted leader in water restoration services in Pengilly. During the cold Minnesota winters, frozen pipes are a common hazard. During the winter, frozen pipes are a common cause of property damage. Here are some of the indications of frozen pipes:

  • Visible signs of frost on pipes
  • Burst pipes
  • Gurgling sounds and banging sounds may indicate ice traveling through your pipes
  • No water coming out of the faucet, or slow or uneven water supply
  • Mildew smells
  • Taps slow to a trickle
  • Water on walls
  • Odors in pipes
  • Freezing temperatures

One of the best ways to prevent pipes from freezing is to prevent drafts from coming into the structure. Even a small gap can cause enough of a change in temperature to compromise the water supply in your home. One way to prevent cold air from entering your home is to install a basement waterproofing system. By preventing cold air from entering the home, you will be protecting your pipes from cold winter drafts, improving the energy efficiency in your home, and helping protect your home from flooding and extreme weather.

Basement Water Seepage Issues in Bemidji Homes?

7/21/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage can happen anytime, and homes in Northern Minnesota often have issues with basement seepage. Our Bemidji, Grand We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Beltrami County.

Water damage can happen anytime, and homes in Northern Minnesota often have issues with basement seepage. Our Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing team have the training, equipment, and experience to restore water damage no matter how big the job is. Here is some information from the Insurance Information Institute about the common causes of water seepage and basement leaks:

Lateral pressure: When the soil surrounding your basement absorbs water and expands, it creates stress on your basement walls, causing them to crack, allowing water to seep into the structure.

Hydrostatic pressure: Similar to lateral pressure, hydrostatic pressure can cause buckling and cracking of the walls and foundation of a house.

Poor landscaping: If the grade of the soil around your foundation runs towards your foundation, your basement can flood.

Clogged window wells: If your window wells are filling with water, your window wells may be improperly installed, or the drain is clogged.

Leaky pipes: Inspect your plumbing systems, starting with their entry into the basement to where it leaves, including the sewer line. Make repairs as required.

Pool Leak: Swimming pool leaks can saturate the ground and weaken your home’s foundation.

Leaking In-Ground Sprinkler System in Grand Rapids Home?

7/12/2022 (Permalink)

Sprinklers water a lawn. We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration in Itasca County.

Our Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing team are trusted leaders in water damage restoration in Grand Rapids. A leaking in-ground sprinkler system can waste thousands of gallons of water each month and weaken your home’s foundation. Here are some tips for determining if your sprinkler system is leaking:

  • Find your main sprinkler system valve and shut it off
  • Once you shut off the sprinkler system valve, look at the low flow indicator on your water meter. If it keeps moving, the water leak is inside your home.
  • If the low flow indicator stops moving, the leak is in your main sprinkler system pipe
  • To check for visible irrigation system leaks, turn off your sprinkler system valve and wait at least two minutes. This allows the main sprinkler system pipe to refill with water.
  • Go to your controller and turn on the zone. Go to the zone you turned on and listen for water running.
  • Do you see water bubbling up from the ground? Are there any wet spots or pooling of water?
  • Look for broken sprinkler heads in the zone. If water is not hitting the target area or flowing out of the sprinkler heads, you will need to replace the sprinkler heads.
  • Repeat this process for each zone in your irrigation system
  • Call a certified irrigation contractor if you can’t fix the problem by replacing the sprinkler heads

Ice Dam damage in Bemidji?

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

An ice dam and icicles form on a roof. We are trusted water damage restoration specialists in Beltrami County.

Have you noticed icicles appearing on your roofline? If so, you have an ice dam that is preventing water from draining into your rain gutters and downspouts. SERVPRO® of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing responds to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day, and during the winter months, many of these emergencies involve ice dams. Any water behind the ice dam that remains in a liquid state can penetrate underneath the roof shingles and seep into other openings in the exterior roof covering and can enter the attic space and cause water damage.

The University of Minnesota Extension (UMN) identifies several ways ice dams can form. Here are some examples from UMN:

  • For ice dams to form, there must be snow on the roof, and at the same time, higher portions of the roof’s outside surface must be above 32 degrees Fahrenheit while lower surfaces are below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Heat loss from a house
  • Nonuniform roof surface temperatures

Burst Pipe in Pengilly?

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

A burst, frozen pipe is shown. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Itasca County.

When water damage happens during the winter months, it is often the result of a burst pipe. SERVPRO® of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing, has been restoring water damage for Pengilly residents for years. Here are some helpful tips for preventing burst pipes from the Insurance Information Institute:

  • Check pipes. Look closely for cracks and leaks and have the pipes repaired immediately. Wrap exposed pipes with heating tape.
  • Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system. This will protect the system against increased pressure caused by freezing pipes and help prevent your pipes from bursting.
  • Keep the house warm. Set the thermostat for at least 65 degrees since the temperature inside the walls, where the pipes are located, is substantially colder; a lower temperature will not keep the pipes from freezing.
  • Add extra insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Ideally, the attic should be five to 10 degrees warmer than the outside air. Well-insulated basements and crawl spaces can help protect pipes from freezing. You may also consider insulating unfinished rooms such as garages to keep pipes from freezing.

Leaking Showerhead in Deer River?

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

A shower is running in a bathroom. We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration in Itasca County.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that homes in the United States waste more than one trillion gallons of water each year. SERVPRO® of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing offers these tips from the EPA for detecting leaks in your Deer River home:

Shower Leaks

  • Most leaky showerheads can be fixed by ensuring a tight connection using pipe tape and a wrench. If you are replacing a showerhead, look for one that has earned the WaterSense label.

Other Leaks

  • A good method to check for leaks is to examine your water use. It is likely that a family of four has a serious leak problem if its winter water use exceeds 12,000 gallons per month.
  • Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak.
  • To check for a toilet bowl leak, place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl within ten minutes without flushing, you have a leak.

Sewer Backup Prevention Tips for Hibbing Homes?

11/10/2021 (Permalink)

A sewer line has been dug up in a backyard to locate a clog. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in St. Louis County.

Sewer backups can happen any time in Hibbing. SERVPRO® of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing offers these tips from the Insurance Information Institute for preventing sewer backups in your sewer lateral and in the city main:

  • Properly dispose of grease
    • Cooking oil should be poured into a heat-resistant container and disposed of properly after it cools off, not in the drain. Washing grease down the drain with hot water is unsatisfactory. As the grease cools off, it will solidify either in the drain, the property owner’s line, or in the main sewer causing the line to constrict and eventually clog.
  • Properly dispose of paper products
    • Paper towels, disposable (and cloth) diapers, hygienic wipes, and feminine products do not deteriorate quickly. They can cause a great deal of trouble in the property owner’s lateral and the city main.
  • Periodically cut tree roots.
    • If you have continuing problems with tree roots in your lateral, you may have to regularly have the roots cut by a professional
  • Replace your line with a new plastic pipe
    • Plastic pipe will prevent tree roots from entering your line is to replace your line and tap with new plastic pipe
  • Install a backwater prevention valve to prevent sewer backflows

Water Intrusion in Grand Rapids?

4/6/2021 (Permalink)

Water can be seen seeping through a basement corner wall. We are leaders in water restoration in Itasca County!

Blame it on the window well.

The last storm blew lots of debris around my yard that ended up in one of my basement’s window wells. With all the bad weather, I hadn’t been outside in a while, or I would have noticed the clog that was allowing snowmelt and rainwater to stand in the well and seep into my basement through the window well. I went downstairs to inspect my basement and found the water damage. All of my cardboard storage boxes and furniture were standing in water!

I called SERVPRO of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing, and they came out and assessed the problem and immediately began the cleanup and restoration process. Fortunately, it ended up being an easy repair. They moved and cleaned, deodorized, and sanitized all of the contents of my basement and set up drying machines and air blowers to remove the excess moisture from the room. They fixed the window well and documented the drying process and helped me with the insurance paperwork. Now you would never know there had been any water damage in my basement.

The Power of Water

1/18/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage on the floor Water travels everywhere

No matter what the cause is, the damage from water can be extreme. It travels everywhere and reaches behind walls. It can get inside the smallest of places and can go thru almost anything. It has the ability to reform landscaping over time and can be powerful enough to wash away roads or weaken the foundation of your house. Water can also cause chaos and disrupt your life at a slow and steady pace, A leaky pipe or overrun tub or sink will allow the water to travel in, under and through anything it can get to including places you cant see such as inside a wall. If it goes undetected, the start of mold growth can occur causing even more damages.

If you experience a flood or any other type of water damage, give SERVPRO a call to get it bone-dry with our high-tech equipment.

One Thing Leads To Another

1/13/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage on the wall Water damages can lead to mold

When the basement floods and the water is mopped up, don’t stop there! Water can get into places you wouldn’t think it would and cause severe damages that could be costly both Healthwise and monetarily if missed or overlooked.

In this home, the water traveled behind the wall causing hidden damages that started the growth of mold. Any type of mold is a risk to your health, so it is important to catch the water damages as soon as possible to avoid mold growth. SERVPRO cut out the section of wall, removed the mold that was found and then treated the area before getting the wet areas dried up quickly to avoid any further damages from occurring.

Have SERVPRO come take care of the issue right away or to remove any mold found in your home.

Do you suspect a Sewer line Blockage?

1/4/2021 (Permalink)

Sewage backup in basement The owner removed the cleanout cap to check for blockage and sewage spilled out all over the basement floor.

To check sewer cleanout for possible blockage in the sewer line, make sure you turn off the water source to avoid a lot of damages from spillage when removing the cap. It is recommended that you know where all of the locations of the cleanout caps are, not just the main one. Knowing this will help you maintain proper function of the sewer lines, to avoid sewage back up into your home.

A few things to do if you suspect a blockage would be;

  • Listen for gurgling in the drains of your sinks, bathtubs, shower stalls and toilets. Hearing a gurgling sound is an indication that you may have a blockage.
  • Flush your toilet and check to see if water backs up into the tub or shower.
  • When you wash clothes, check to see if water backs up into the tub or shower. A clog will cause the water to go elsewhere as it tries to drain.
  • Run the bathroom sink water and watch your toilet for bubbles or rising water.

Contact a plumber to help clear the blockage and if you experience the unfortunate event of a backup into the house, shut off the water source and then give SERVPRO a call to help with possible solutions and damage control.

Water in Your Crawl Space

4/7/2020 (Permalink)

Water in your crawl space can cause damage to your home

Excessive moisture in a crawl space can cause your foundation supports to warp and lose their structural integrity.

Excessive moisture can promote the growth of Mold and Mildew.

Standing water can attract pests and small animals.

What to do when you have water in your crawl space

Have a professional inspect your crawl space for foundation cracks and broken pipes.

Dry out the crawl space by removing the excess water and moisture.

Clean up the crawl space by removing debris and wet insulation.

When to Call A Professional

Water mitigation is not a challenging task, but it is hard, physical labor. You might want to consider the following:

A crawl space that is between 3 feet and 5 feet high is considered tall. Even such a tall crawlspace is very difficult to move around in. Many crawl spaces are lower than this.

Tight Access Point of entry makes it difficult to work in the crawl space. There may be only one small door that allows access to the crawl space, and can sometimes be in an inconvenient area, such as a bedroom closet or kitchen pantry floor.

Warning:  Rodents can often get into the crawl space.  Their droppings can contain harmful bacteria.

Cleaning up after water damage

2/6/2020 (Permalink)

Depending on the amount of water first thing salvage important belongings. In the case of standing water in any room, you should quickly unplug any electronics before you start recovering important belongings. When salvaging items that have come in contact with water, prioritize things that are the most difficult to replace or the most expensive, such as important documents, family keepsakes, computers, and TVs.  Start by wiping all of your personal items down with an antimicrobial, move them to a dry location and put fans on them, until the insurance company can get there to assess if items need to be professionally cleaned or thrown away. Other than damaged drywall and flooring, keep everything around until the insurance company comes, so they can confirm the quality and grade of your items to file your claim. If you’ve been gone with a water leak for more than 72 hours, mold has had a chance to spread, and it’s all considered graywater – meaning everything must go.

Give SERVPRO of Bemidji, Grand Rapids and Hibbing a call at (218) 999-9799 if you have water damage to see how we can help.

It might now look like much water

2/6/2020 (Permalink)

There's nothing like waking up first thing in the morning, walking out of your bedroom and into a pool of water in your hallway. Next thing you know your socks are wet, and you just realized today might be considered a bad day. First thing anyone does in this situation is figure out where it came from. You discover that you have a broken water line to the vanity sink in your bathroom. You turn off the valve right there under the sink and stop the water and call your plumber to come fix it. That's not the end of the issue yet.

So, the plumber is on his way and you're looking around at all this water on the bathroom floor, your carpeted hallway is soaked and of course there is still water dripping out from the vanity. This is a mess most people don't know how to handle, a few towels and the dehumidifier out of your basement might not be the answer. The common reaction to water everywhere is to get some towels and maybe a fan or two.

When it comes to large amounts of water, towels and fans are not going to be enough to dry things below the surface. Once water has saturated a carpet down to the pad, the sub floor is now affected. Same for walls, the outer layer of drywall being saturated means that most likely there is wet framing studs that are at risk of being wet as well. With the knowledge, you now know the next call should be SERVPRO.

SERVPRO of Bemidji, Grand Rapids and Hibbing has certified water restoration technicians with the training and tools to make sure that everything is dry and sanitary by the time the job is done. SERVPRO will work with you and your insurance company to make sure everything is handled properly and to IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) standards.

SERVPRO of Bemidji, Grand Rapids and Hibbing can quickly and safely repair water damage caused by frozen pipes.

Outdoor pipes most likely to freeze include:

  • Outdoor hose bibs
  • Swimming pool supply lines
  • Water sprinkler lines

Pipes in unheated or partially heated areas are also at risk of freezing, including:

  • Basements
  • Crawl spaces
  • Garages

What are Moisture Meters?

2/27/2019 (Permalink)

In homes many of the materials are highly absorbent and don’t look wet. This can cause future issues if not properly addressed, but thankfully here at SERVPRO of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing we have specialized equipment to measure the amount of moisture in the materials and in the air. The three main meters we use are an invasive, non-invasive and hygrometer.

The invasive meter is the more accurate meter for identifying the level of moisture materials. The draw back to this meter is that it has two pins that must be inserted into that material that you are trying to measure.

The non- invasive meter can be used to check moisture of a material that you can’t or don’t want to poke holes in. it uses a pad sensor and electromagnetic signals. Unfortunately, this meters’ reading can be skewed by metal in the materials that you are checking.

The hygrometer is a meter that we use to measure the air conditions such as the relative humidity and the temperature. The combination of these reading can tell us the amount of moisture in the air.

With these meters we check the affected areas and the unaffected areas. By checking the unaffected areas, we get the goal for drying. So, if you experience a water loss give SERVPRO of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing a call.

SINCE YOU ASKED: WHAT ARE ICE DAMS?

2/25/2019 (Permalink)

Since You Asked

Betsy from Grand Rapids asked: What exactly are ice dams?

That seems simple enough to answer, an ice dam is formed when you have a lot of heat loss through your roof causing snow to melt and run down, but them freezes as it gets close to the edge of the roof. This can be seen by blocks of ice on the edge of a roof, or large ice sickles that hang from the roof. Easy enough to explain, however they can cause big problems.

When you get an ice dam the snow that continues to melt will get trapped by the dam and have no place to go it can then back up under your shingles causing a leak. Many roof leaks in the late winter early spring are from ice dams.

To prevent ice dams, the first step is to limit the amount of heat loss through your roof. Making sure you are insulated well enough is key. The next is to get rid of the snow on the bottom of the roof before it turns to ice. You can use roof rakes or brooms, but make sure you are safe on a slipper roof. If you already have ice making channels through the ice dam allows the water behind the dam to drain off the roof. You can hose tap water on a warm day to cut through the ice. Work upward from the lower edge of the dam. However, the channel will become ineffective within days and is only a temporary solution to ice dam damage.

How to Prevent Water Damage in the Winter - Outside Tips

1/16/2019 (Permalink)

Protecting your home from water damage is always a good idea.  Damage can happen inside and outside and that is why it is always a good idea to keep an eye on your home from the inside but also the outside.  Here are some tips to help prevent water damage from the outside of your home.

Seal off your building: Checking for cracks in your walls, windows, floors, and foundations can go a long way when trying to prevent water damage.  If you see some cracks you should seal them with a waterproofing sealant.

Snow removal is the name of the game: One thing you want to remember in the winter is to keep the snow away from your foundation, that way when spring comes or just some warm winter days when the snow is melting it isn’t leaking into your basement!  Also remember to get that excess snow off your roof to keep it from dripping near your foundation when it starts melting. Hiring a professional service for the task of snow removal from you roof is not always a bad idea, as it can be dangerous. Plus, while they’re up there, they can clear your eaves troughs, too!

Don’t forget about your roof: Ice dams on the roof can cause damage as well. It’s a good idea to install an ice and water shield membrane under the roof covering at least six feet from the eaves troughs line.

Clear catch basins: To facilitate drainage, snow, ice, and debris should be removed from catch basins, as it can build up during the winter.

Don’t forget about your downspouts: Clearing out downspouts, just like you did your catch basins, is a good idea. Downspouts should extend at least 6 feet from your foundation.

Frozen Houses

2/13/2018 (Permalink)

Northern Minnesota it can be a wonderful place to live. We have many beautiful lakes, and four seasons for us to enjoy. As wonderful as it can be it doesn’t prevent disasters from happening especially during the winter.

One way a water loss can happen during the winter is if the houses source of heat stops working. Unfortunately, if this happens it can cause the water to turn in to ice and complicate the process of drying out the structure. The first thought most think is to turn on the heat to thaw out the house but that is the last this you want to do.

SERVPRO of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing can help with this process by removing as much of the ice as we can prior to heating the house. Once we can’t remove any more ice by hand we will slowly heat the house and extracting the water as the ice thaws. This process will help minimalize the damage that would be caused if you just thawed the ice all at once essentially flooding the house for a second time. So, if you experience a water loss and it freezes call SERVPRO of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing to help.
